Simple Recipe Template
Description
The Simple Recipe template is a very simple way to store your recipes. It consists of a single library and a single form and does not attempt to generate shopping lists or any of the more advanced features of a dedicated recipe application which, to be honest, probably are better if you have more advanced needs.
Usage Notes
The template is pretty self-explanatory and all of the fields are text fields so can be filled however you wish. The idea with the Main Course field is to enter keywords and make searching for recipes more accurate when using the Advanced Find in Bento. A general search for soup would include all recipes that have soup as an ingredient, whereas an Advanced Find search for all records where Main Course contains soup would give a more accurate result.

Without getting too complex, by adding another library for ingredients you can create a relational loop by having both libraries as related data fields in the other Library. This would replace the ingredients text field in the Recipes Library above. In this way, one can look at the Ingredients Library and immediately see which recipes use that item. Useful if one is trying to create a meal from store cupboard items
I have a similar simple recipe database. I’ve used all the PC based databases in the past and even created complex ones in MS Access. However, I find that as you find recipes you like online, you can simply cut and paste directly into Bento, including the picture. The search capabilities of Bento easily identify the recipes containing your search criteria thereby eliminating the need to enter ingredients in separate fields.
In the downloadable data file of recipes it makes mention of cup measures for various quantities. Are these UK imperial cups, Canadian metric cups, US customary cups or US legal cup measures?
I need this information in order to get the recipes correct.
Apparently they’re US customary cups.
I have a problem with the 2nd library lookup mentioned by Sandra, in that whenever I look up ingredients for a new recipe from my ingredients library, changing the quantity in the ingredients table changes the quantity in every other recipe containing this ingredient. Is there a way around this? am I doing it wrong?
Mark,
If you are using a separate Ingredients library with included amounts, then changing the quantities for an individual recipe will change the quantity in every other library – you are not doing anything wrong. As you say this is a major problem when trying to maintain the integrity of the original recipes!
I have tried to see if there is a way round the problem and have not found one that allows you to have a related Ingredients library and have specified quantities.
One suggestion would be to remove the quantities field from the Ingredients library – which then acts like an index allowing all the recipes that use that ingredient to be easily found (which I have found useful). The Instructions field would then specify exactly what quantities are need for that particular recipe.
You could use an auto number Field, but you would need to create multiple records for different quantities
