Upgrade Rebate – Details
I apologize that I didn’t know about the Bento rebate offer beforehand – I’m not happy with Filemaker, Inc. right now…
Here is the excerpt from the press release (notice the word “free”):
Bento 3 has a suggested list price of $49, but, for a limited time only, FileMaker is offering a $20 rebate to existing users of Bento 1 and Bento 2. Qualified customers who purchase Bento 3 through the FileMaker Store will get an instant rebate and pay just $29 for Bento 3. Qualified customers who purchase Bento 3 at an Apple store or other retailer can request a $20 rebate online.. Customers who have purchased Bento 2 between August 30, 2009 and October 14, 2009 are eligible to receive Bento 3 for free. A 30-day trial version is also available at www.bentotrial.com.

If you’re Canadian, the page(s) you need to fill out to order Bento 3 at the discount just don’t work. I called FileMaker to try to order by phone, but they use the same pages as the Great Unwashed, so there was, shall we say, difficulty.
I spent a total of an hour and a half this morning fiddling around on the website, and dealing with a pleasant and patient young man at FileMaker customer service. I just got an email saying my order has gone through, and FileMaker is alerted to the problem.
If you’re Canadian, do yourself a favour and wait until the problem on the website is fixed before you order.
Robin, this is very strange. Thanks for fighting on the front for all Canadians (my aunt lives in Mississauga)! Hopefully Filemaker will really fix it.
But, after all, this is the first time. Let’s wait how the British are doing with their rebates – in their case there is even a different currency involved…
I’m not too happy with Filemaker right now either. After paying for both crippled 1 & 2 (not within the last 30 days) now they include features that probably should have been in #1. I asked them if I could get two $20 rebates on Bento 3 since I bought two licenses. OF COURSE NOT!
Filemaker has consistently punished anyone stupid enough to buy their products. When Bento 2 came out with NO UPGRADE price, they acted as if they didn’t know what that was. So after complaints by legions of Bento 1 buyers, they reluctantly give us this REBATE ?
The worse part of the rebate is that it comes as a Citi Bank Mastercard pre-paid credit card. It would have been better as a simple cheque.
So, now I am a registered Citi Bank credit card user, and not of my own choosing.
You DO have to read the fine print. It appears that if the card is inactive – not being used – for a month, there is a MONTHLY CHARGE against the card.
To find out your balance, you have to register yourself at Citi Bank.
I have $0.09 left on the card. I’m calling Citi Bank to cancel the card and ask (you have to ask, another fine print item) to keep your information private.
I know that it is popular for companies to give these prepaid credit cards instead of cheques. They probably get some form of kickback, but seriously, what about us? Who wants to get straddled with charges for not using an unwanted pre-paid card?
Cheques please!
Stephen, that’s a wild story – thanks for sharing this. And you are one of the lucky ones – not everyone is so good at reading the fine print…
