Newest bug discovered: when you delete a Library, the size of the database file doesn’t change! Apparently all Bento deletes is the reference to the Library, but not the records or the media!

Since Bento 3 is so unstable, I decided to create sub-sets of my database for archiving purposes. For example, my daughter’s High School sports career is over, so I don’t need to do much more editing on her race reports… but one of my objectives was to reduce the size of that sub-database which Bento didn’t do!

When I delete a library, close and reopen Bento 3 my database size shrinks.

I just got rid of one of my libraries that was well over 500 records and it took my database size from 4.1MB to 1.8MB.

Posts like this make me want to stop coming to this site.

Vince, thanks for the great tip. That’s why I’m glad for any helpful comment I get.

The problem is that the user’s guide doesn’t tell you that it works that way. I expected Bento to add and delete data on the fly, that way if the computer crashes, everything is saved. So I still think this doesn’t work correctly. And it didn’t work the way I handled it, that’s why I posted my report:
(Since I thought Bento would work on the fly because the data disappeared from the screen -) I renamed the database file after the deletion and reverted to the last back-up (I did not quit Bento). THIS way the reduced database file DID NOT shrink.
I tested it one way and you tested it another way. I’m glad you found the right way which helps all users. Your comment is very much appreciated.

    Hi
(I am not sure if I have the same problem) but I need a little help. I want to to delete a library from my Bento. When I delete it bento 3 stops working. I have to do a force quit and restart the bento.
    Do you have any suggestion?

    thx

    Yiannis,
I hope you have a back-up of your database file. Then you can try the same thing with the back-up file if everything else fails.
Have you tried it a few times? Does Bento stop working every time when you try to delete the library after you re-start it?
Sometimes it takes a while to delete a library. Make sure you wait a minute to give Bento enough time.

I deleted many libraries in the past few days with Bento 3 and never had any problems. So it could be a corrupt database file in your case.
