Lion, iCloud, and Bento…
Filed Under Bento Basics, Bento Bugs, Bento Issues, Bento News, Bento Tips, Editorial
Urgent recommendations to all Bento users who are not in the habit of doing so:
Check the Bento Forums regularly (link on the sidebar) for any known issues, look at recent user posts, and report all technical issues there as well.
These forums are moderated by Filemaker employees who have extensive testing facilites and personnel and are not afraid to use them. We don’t have any resources like that at BentoUsers.
Let me repeat the most recent issue:
Before you migrate from Mobile Me to iCloud or otherwise turn on on iCloud,
do this:
Make sure you have Bento 4.06
Launch it.
Quit Bento.
After that, you should be ready to surf the new Clouds.
Since Mobile Me will be available until June 30, 2012, I personally am not in a hurry to get OSX Lion and iCloud. But since there are very few issues which have been reported in the Bento forums, I have to assume that Bento is generally ready for the transition. That doesn’t mean that the problems reported here on BentoUsers are not real. But they are not the norm, but rather horrible bad luck.
Still, let’s all keep our eyes and ears open…

How do I save a Library so that it can be opened as a template from the File: New Library from Template…. Menu.
I am using Bento 4 on V 10.7.2 of Lion. I cannot find the Bentodb file in the Application Support folder. In fact there is no Bento folder in Applicaton Support folder.
Dan,
You can’t. You have to export the Library as a template, then import it and a new Library is created from it.
And I’m not using Lion, but I wasn’t aware that the location of the database file would have changed. Are you really looking in [User]/Library/Application Support? And why do you need to find it anyway? If you do need to find it and it’s really not there, please report the problem to the Bento forums, because I’m stumped by that – especially if Bento is working fine, which means it is actually using the Bento.Bentodb file.
I am having the same issue as Dan. Also, I upgraded to iCloud prior to seeing the “warning”. All I get is the spinning beach ball.
Who can I call to help me unravel these mysteries? I have a lot of important data tied up in files I cannot open.
Alan,
this is a case for the Bento forums. They have testing facilities which I have not. Good luck!
Dan, you are sure, that you looked in the right OS X library? The Bento database is located in the user space. Since Lion, you have use the finder menu, press alt and look in the “go to”-menu, else it’s the user’s library is not visible. (I’ve got a german localization, so I hope the menu item is right.)
I just open Bento after few days.
In APP right click on Bento – show package content then in “Content” open “PlugIns” then Open “DataSource”, move to trash this file “iPhotoDataSource.bundle”, exit and open Bento.
By me works
Bento 4.0.6 works fine w/ address book Mac os x 10.7.3 until you turn on icloud. Anyone else have a know issue and/or fix for icloud sync w/ address book / Bento? Bento will just spin and the computer fan kicks in. I think the mac is having trouble syncing w/ icloud and bento. I decided to just turn off icloud alltogether in address book Macbook and iphone. In doing so, I ended up duplicating all my contacts in iphone. One try, I lost all the groups in Macbook. Long story short, make sure you have back ups in both Bento and address book before trying icloud. several hours of trying different procedures to have everything work in sync w/ no luck. I’m abondoning the icloud idea for now.
Any updates on the Bento 4.0.6 crashing problems? It’s a daily event for me. I keep reporting it, but no feedback. Where are your responses to these posts? For example, Dean’s above?
Dean, I don’t have iCloud (or Lion for that matter). So I can’t give you an opinion. I’m just a regular Bento user (therefore BentoUsers.com) who can give advice on the usage and creative solutions, but not really on technical problems. They have discussed the iCloud issues extensively in the Bento forums, so please present your issues there – they’ll give you expert technical support for free. They can test all environments, because they are Filemaker employees. Thanks.
Ihor,
I personally have no regular crashes anymore. The only strange one that happens to me is an overnight crash – if I leave my computer on (sleeping) during the night, many times Bento has “quit unexpectedly” when I wake the computer in the morning. And it’s the only Mac app that does that. But my Bento 4.0.6 never crashes during my 14-hours days anymore.
The reporting feature (in the pop-up window) is anonymous. Therefore it’s not designed for feedback to the user.
So same advice as for Dean: describe you issues in detail in the BENTO FORUMS. They will give you technical advice and ask follow-up questions. They are very helpful and persistent.
