Graham, Gareth Is Granting Your Request

Attention, Bento users: from today on, look for your name in the title of a new post!
Gareth, BentoUsers‘ brand new guest-contributor will make templates for you, even simple ones like this one: Gardening.
Submit your requests as a comment in the article Template Ideas, Please! where Gareth will choose his victim. This time it’s Graham’s request that tickled his fancy.

I will still give tips as well, but Gareth will do the actual work – thanks a bunch, my friend! I like the idea especially because it offers something that the new Filemaker, Inc. Template Exchange does not offer.

Gareth is a MSCE and a CCNA (computer specialists know what this means) and has been working on a Mac for three years. He loves Bento even more, after he found out that its limits can be overcome “… if you are clever and look beyond the problem. Ideas just keep popping into my head!” Gareth, I would like to add that you also have the tenacity to keep trying until you find the right workaround or solution!

Gas Mileage Template

Account Manager Template

This template helps you manage your online (mostly) and offline accounts. It can be used like a bookmark, keeps track of user names, passwords, and more. If Bento 3 introduces an Encryption Field, because the developers do try to listen to user requests, this template could even be more useful in the future.

Box Inventory Template

Phil is new to Bento, so his templates are simple. But they are also straight forward and come right to the point. And for all three reasons they make a lot of sense and are easy to understand and use.

Pet Care Template

This template makes a little more sense if you have more than one pet or for a kennel owner. But it’s still nice to see all your pet’s personal data and keep track of any appointments. Tip: you could add (and tie in) a Pet Diary Library to keep track of your pet’s progress, tricks, and achievements!

Description: The Pet Care Template consists of two Libraries and one Collection for iCal Events (Pet appointments). The main Pet Care Library displays all info on three forms, including a Related Records Field (Pet License Info Library).

Medical Template

This template helps to track Medical appointments and expenses. It includes one Collection for the Address Book Library and one for iCal Events where you can keep addresses of doctors, pharmacies, etc., and rudimentary appointment info. The detailed info goes into the main Medical Library.

Wine Collection Template

Phil Barnhart submitted this enhanced Wine Collection Template that’s based on an example picture displayed on the Bento support site.
It includes four Smart Collections for different types of wine. Otherwise the template is self-explanatory for every wine connoisseur.
But I’d like to let Phil briefly intoduce himself:

“… well I’m very much an amateur wine collector and only have a small cellar in the basement that is basically an insulated box built into some crawl-space. The reason that I made the template is that I’m moving soon into a house that will have a much larger cellar and, while I’ll be able to add many more bottles to my collection, I will also have a hard time finding things when I want them. This way I should be able to organize my bottles. The Location field will contain shelf and bin number.

Mostly I have Oregon wines because that’s where I live, but I also have wines from California, Washington and France (Bordeaux mostly). I have been hesitant to buy any really good bottles because I am unsure of how well my current cellar actually works. Hopefully that will change soon!”

Job Search Template

Here is Joe’s description and some usage notes:

I created this template for Bento to manage a job search. It has fields that allow integration with both your iCal Events and your iCal Tasks to ensure that you do not miss a meeting or a follow-up activity, and it will let you store relational emails and documents in the record. I was laid off on March 27, 2009 and immediately created this search. Using this tool I was able to manage all of my opportunities and get hired within three weeks.

DVD Library Template

Description
This template allows you to catalogue your DVD collection and store searchable descriptions, ratings, and notes along with an image of the cover art. It is a single Library with two forms.

Usage Notes
The template should be completely self-explanatory but it is worth mentioning that the Details form allows you to record special features, region, film classification, edition etc. The film classifications relate to the BBFC ratings for all films and DVDs released in the UK but the choices field can be easily edited to fit different regional classifications.

Cross Country Template

Description
Cross Country running is a popular High School sport in the US. This template is for the millions of proud parents who want to keep track of their children’s CC meets and the end-of-season banquet.

Usage Notes
The template consists of a collection (with two forms) for your existing iCal library. You do need to have the Holiday Pack installed to take advantage of the original look and spacing of the festive Banquet form but if you don’t have it installed Bento will simply apply a built-in one.

The design takes advantage of every inch of screen real estate on a 15 inch MacBookPro. No scroll bars needed and the Library pane is still visible!

Special features include a media field for race pictures, a couple of calculation fields, a rating field with a new purpose, a choice field, many checkbox fields, and a file list field for race results and more. The Races form contains 24 (!) fields, a textbox, and a decorative separator.

Some of the field labels have been used for additional descriptions and comments (look closely!), so they become multi purpose.

The name of the runners and the team are for demonstration purposes only, of course… Enjoy! Comments are now open.

Brewing Log Template

Description
The Brewing Log template will be useful to anyone who makes their own wine or beer. It consists of a single library and a single form but it does include a Related Records List to your iCal Events library.

Usage Notes
The template is pretty self-explanatory although it is probably worth mentioning (particularly for non-home-brewers such as myself) that OG and FG are the Specific Gravities used to calculate total alcohol in beer and wine where OG is the Original Gravity and FG is the Final Gravity.

Simple Recipe Template

Description
The Simple Recipe template is a very simple way to store your recipes. It consists of a single library and a single form and does not attempt to generate shopping lists or any of the more advanced features of a dedicated recipe application which, to be honest, probably are better if you have more advanced needs.

Usage Notes
The template is pretty self-explanatory and all of the fields are text fields so can be filled however you wish. The idea with the Main Course field is to enter keywords and make searching for recipes more accurate when using the Advanced Find in Bento. A general search for soup would include all recipes that have soup as an ingredient, whereas an Advanced Find search for all records where Main Course contains soup would give a more accurate result.
